What is Infinite Craft?

Infinite Craft is a crafting game with no recipe book. You start with four elements in the sidebar: 💧 Water 🔥 Fire 🌬️ Wind 🌍 Earth. Drag one onto another and a new element appears with its own emoji. Water and fire make steam. Earth and water make a plant. Each new element goes into the sidebar and can be combined with everything else, and the results keep coming: cities, animals, philosophers, memes, chemical compounds, whole fictional universes.

Neal Agarwal released it in January 2024 and it spread faster than almost any browser game before it, because the results are generated by a language model rather than written by hand. The first time a pair is tried, the model decides what it makes, and from then on that answer is fixed for everyone. That is what makes it infinite: nobody has written the end of the tree, because there is no end.

How to play Infinite Craft

  1. Press Play. The game loads in this page with the four starting elements in the sidebar on the right.
  2. Drag an element from the sidebar onto the workspace, then drag a second one onto it. On a phone, tap one and then the other.
  3. The two merge into a new element. It appears where you dropped them and is added to the sidebar.
  4. Keep combining. Use the search box to find elements once your list is long, and Sort by time to see the newest.
  5. Drag an element onto the bin to clear it from the workspace, or press Reset to start again.

Every game begins the same way, and the first few layers are worth knowing by heart. These thirty pairs give you the building blocks that most longer chains run through.

How to make a specific thing

The trick to Infinite Craft is working backwards. Decide what two things would sensibly make your target, then make those, then their parts. A few worked examples:

  • Human: Water + Plant = Swamp, Cloud + Fire = Lightning, Swamp + Lightning = Life, Life + Earth = Human.
  • City: Human + Human = Family, Family + Family = Village, Village + Village = City.
  • Computer: Sand + Fire = Glass, Lightning + Stone = Electricity, Electricity + Glass = Screen, Screen + Human = Computer (results near the top of the tree vary a little).
  • Dragon: Fire + Lizard = Dragon, and Lizard is Egg + Sand, and Egg is Bird + Life.

Because results are generated, a pair far from the basics can surprise you. That is part of the game. If a recipe returns something odd, try the same idea with a neighbouring element: Robot plus Human and Machine plus Human tend to land in the same place.

Tips for going deeper

  • Combine an element with itself. Stone + Stone, Tree + Tree and Human + Human all lead somewhere useful.
  • Reuse a strong element. Fire, Water, Human and Life combine well with almost everything; run each new discovery through them.
  • Chase a theme. Once you have Dinosaur, try it with Fire, Ice, Robot, Ghost and Space. Themed chains produce the most first discoveries.
  • Watch the emoji. It tells you what category the game thinks a result belongs to, which hints at what it will combine with.
  • Search before you craft. With a few hundred elements it is easy to rebuild something you already own.
  • Reset is permanent. There is no undo, so use the bin for the workspace and leave Reset alone unless you mean it.

Playing on a phone, tablet or Chromebook

The game is plain HTML and runs on anything with a modern browser. On a touchscreen the sidebar becomes a strip along the bottom and combining is tap-then-tap instead of a drag. Nothing is installed, and your discoveries are kept in the browser, so the same device picks up where it left off.

Frequently asked questions about Infinite Craft

Is Infinite Craft free to play here?

Yes. The game runs in this page, nothing is downloaded or installed and there is no account. Press Play and the four starting elements appear in the sidebar.

What is Infinite Craft?

Infinite Craft is a crafting game made by Neal Agarwal in early 2024. You start with water, fire, wind and earth. Drag any two elements together and the game returns a new one, and because the results are generated rather than looked up in a fixed list, the tree of things you can make never ends.

How are the recipes decided?

A language model decides what two elements should make, and once a pair has been answered the result is fixed for everyone. That is why common recipes such as Water plus Fire always give Steam, while an unusual pair may give something nobody has seen before.

What does First Discovery mean?

When your combination produces a result that no player has ever generated before, the game marks it as a first discovery. They get rarer as the game ages, but long, odd chains still find them.

Can I make a specific thing?

Usually, by working backwards. Decide what two things would sensibly make it, then make those. Sandwich is bread plus cheese; bread is dough plus fire; dough is flour plus water. The recipe table above covers the first few layers.

Does my progress save?

Yes. Your discovered elements are stored in the browser on this device. Clearing browser data or pressing Reset removes them.

Is there a search?

Yes. The search box under the sidebar filters your discovered elements, which matters once you have a few hundred. Sort by time puts your newest discoveries first.

Does Infinite Craft work on a phone?

Yes. On a touchscreen you tap one element and then another instead of dragging, and the workspace scrolls. It plays comfortably on a phone held either way.

Is this the official Infinite Craft?

No. The original is at neal.fun. This site hosts a browser build of the game with the same mechanics so it can be played here alongside related crafting games.
